Volume IV Issue 8, May/June 2009

Welcome to the Ladybug Chronicles/2008-2009; the fourth grade edition. This newsletter is a monthly publication written by fourth grade students at JFK to keep parents, staff and other students informed about the "happenings" in fourth grade. We hope you enjoy our newsletter as we work on our journalistic writing skills!

Classroom News - Room 22:

It’s the end of the year and we are bittersweet. We are ecstatic about 10 weeks of summer fun but we will miss our school family! We finished taking all of our MCAS tests until next year. Phew! We read the book Charlotte’s Web. It was “SOME” book. You might even say it was “TERRIFIC” and “RADIANT”.

June was a home run! In P.E. we ran the mile and all achieved the National Badge or a Certificate. We had a buzzing good Spelling Bee with the whole fourth grade. No one in our class won. Sports Day was sadly canceled, but we improvised and had an indoor event instead. It was fun!! We all wore our purple tie die shirts! We have learned to keep on getting smarter! Fourth grade was a blast!

Classroom News - Room 23:

We started off May with a visit from Ms. Liz. She helped us with our Mother’s Day Cards and books. Then we went to the Franklin Public Library for our field trip. We learned many things about history there. We finished our myths. For our myths we had to choose a partner to write our story. Since MCAS was close we had to start MCAS math crunch, which means we had to review so much before we started the test. Rock Poetry Day was a blast! We listened to music the WHOLE day and we didn’t even finish until Monday. We made a visual imagery dictionary and drew pictures that our mind’s eye created when we heard the different songs. Then we had our recorder concert with Mrs. MacMurray. We had so much fun with Mrs. Mac. In social studies we learned about the South west United States and the Navajo. We also had the EXPO, which was really cool. Most of the parents and some of the grades came to it. In science we learned all about electricity and magnetism. We learned how to build series and parallel circuits and to make an electromagnet. Also, our resident engineer, Mr. Adams, came and helped us build a hands free lantern. They were very cool and they all worked!

Overall this year, we have loved reader’s workshop. As a class we have read a little more than 1,100 books! That’s about 50 books per student. We have never read so much in our lives! As a class, we read Charlotte’s Web, the next day we watched the movie for it. Mrs. Landrigan and Mrs. Mulligan came back to visit us and they brought Mrs. Sabolinski and Mrs. Kingsland –Smith with them. Mrs. Sabolinski wrote us a note telling us how much she loved watching us learn. It was very exciting. Mrs. Williams has started blogging about reading. Check out her blog at http://mrswreadandroll.blogspot.com/. We love to read and are making plans for summer reading.

For sports day and the poetry coffee house we got to tie dye t-shirts. Our color for them was Green. We invited Ms. Liz to our Coffee House. We shared our poems with the parents and Ms. Liz. Then 5the grade had their celebration with Mr. Cool and Mr. Spice. They invited us to watch the show. It was cool to watch the teachers play at the end of the show. Sports day was canceled, but the 4th grade teachers held an indoor sports day for us. We got to play Wii games, board games and big movement games. We had a great time. The school year is almost over!!!!! Fourth grade has been so much fun. Many of us have fun summer plans ahead with trips and travels around New England and the country. We can’t believe that we’re almost 5the graders! UH OH!!!

Classroom News - Room 24:

The last few months of school were some of the most interesting in Room 24. We read a book called Charlotte’s Web. We made bumper stickers to save Wilbur. Then we watched two movies about Charlotte’s Web, the live action movie, and the cartoon movie. Then we compared the two movies and chose which one we liked better. The majority of our class liked the live action movie best. Mr. Adams came in again to talk to us about engineering and he served as our consultant as we worked in groups to design a lantern that could be used, hands-free. We even had to design our own switches! It was electrifying! We completed the Electricity unit and took our test. We are excited about our last chip sale. May and June have been very exciting months for us.

Classroom News - Room 25:

May was magnificent and we are ready for whatever comes towards us! In math, we reviewed everything we learned since the beginning of the year. Then we took a challenging math MCAS test and we even got 3 delectable York peppermint patties. We handed in our last United States region project! We had our Expo and showed off all our gorgeous US region projects. While we were learning about the place we call home which is the “USA” we took our West capitals and abbreviations test. In reading, we continued doing All Star Reading and we finished it! We made it to third base. We continued to listen to The Lightning Thief. On a Friday in May, we took a bus to the Franklin Public Library and we got to take out two books. For Team Spirit Day, we dressed in Red Sox outfits and we got to wear baseball hats until the pledge. We designed tiles inspired by books with Mrs. Merten’s mom, Mrs. Cronin. We had our recorder show which was superior, but so sad because Miss Santos was not there. Some of the moms helped with tie dying our t-shirts on Tie Dye Tuesday. Rock Poetry rocked our classroom with unique songs that everybody picked. We had a bottle and can drive and we would like to thank everybody who participated in the event. May is promptly ending, but June is right around the corner!

We did many things in June in Room 25. We had our electricity test and made models like headlights and belts for “Light Your Way.” We also read our poems at our Poetry Coffee House. We are still reading a book called Charlotte’s Web and the main characters are a pig, a spider, and a girl named Fern. We went to the 5th grade dress rehearsal because we are going to do it next year. We had our end-of-the-year math test and English test. Our class is listening to The Lightning Thief and we are almost done with it. Mr. Cool came to our school and played some cool instruments. Since we couldn’t have outdoor Sports Day, we had indoor Sports Day. We played Wii and board games. We had an extra recess because we turned in all our reading lists. On Friday, we had a pizza party and we get to have free pizza. School is just about over and we are sad to leave fourth grade, but happy to be fifth graders in the fall.
