Room 29 Classroom Guidelines and Procedures

Welcome

Dear Parents,
Welcome to 5th grade. Fifth grade can be a big year for many students, as they are dealing with many different changes. They have finally become the oldest in the school which can be exciting for some, while others are already looking toward their next big transition ... middle school. I look forward to guiding your children through this current school year, and helping them to become ready for that next big step.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 508-541-5261 ext.2029 or send in a note with your child. I will make every effort to get back to you within 24 hours. I look forward to working with both you and your child during the upcoming year.
Mrs. Kroeber

Homework

We are working toward improving organization skills in fifth grade. The assignment notebook should help keep you informed of your child’s daily homework assignments, test, and long-term projects. Students are responsible for all missed homework. If your child misses more than two assignments, they will be required to complete them during recess. You will be notified each time your child does not hand in a homework assignment.

I do assign long-term projects and book reports during the year. The students are required to keep due date information in their homework notebooks. We also review these due dates in the classroom. My policy for late projects and book reports is that the student will lose 1 grade for every day that the assignment is late.

Grading Policy

I use a few different methods of grading everyday work.
• Percentage grade
• Scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest. A copy of the rubric is attached.
• Check marks. A check plus represents work that is correct and displays a strong understanding of the subject; a check represents work that is mostly correct , but may lack detail; and a check minus represents work that may be partially correct, but does not display a strong understanding of the subject.

I have also attached a copy of the rubric I use to grade formal writing assignments. Students will receive three grades: one overall grade, a mechanics grade, and a content grade.
I require a parent signature on all assignments, tests, and projects that receive a grade lower than 70%, a 3, or a check.

Math Facts

Students should have a strong knowledge of their math facts by 5th grade. If your child is still struggling with these, then he/she should be practicing their facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) at least 5-10 minutes each day as part of their daily routine. I can not stress the importance of this skill enough, as everything we do in math builds on this foundation.

Specialists

It is important that your child remembers sneakers on P.E. days and their library books on library days. Fifth graders are not allowed to call home for these items if they have forgotten them on the specific days. Please refer to Specialists page for current year information.

Snack

There will be a 10 minute working snack break at approximately 10:00 a.m. each morning. As snack is eaten in the classroom, please try to keep it simple and healthy. Please remember that only one snack is allowed during snack time. Students are allowed to bring a water bottle to keep on their desk. I encourage it during hot days, as it is easier than making many trips to the water fountain.

Birthdays

In keeping with the spirit of the district policies on wellness and food allergies, I am requesting that no food items be brought into the classroom for distribution to the class. The office will continue to recognize your child’s birthday with a birthday book. If you would like to send something into the classroom some alternatives to food may include: stickers, pencils, a favorite game, etc.

Kleenex/Wet Wipes

With the cold season approaching us, most children use quite a few tissues. Please join the Kleenex club and send one box of Kleenex to help our classroom.
Also, due to the fact that there is no water in our classrooms, washing hands before snack can become a major interruption to our day. Donations of wet wipe packages and/or hand sanitizer would be greatly appreciated.

Book Club/Software Club

I will be sending home book club orders each month for the students. Please do not feel obligated to purchase books through these clubs. It is voluntary. However, it is a wonderful way to encourage your child’s reading throughout the year. No cash will be accepted for the book orders, and all checks should be made payable to the specific book club.

Classroom Magazine

We will be using Time for Kids magazine as part of our Current Events instruction. This wonderful magazine is a useful tool to teach students about issues and news from around the world. You will be receiving more information about how to purchase your child’s subscription.

Dismissal

If you know in advance that your child will be dismissed early or will be going home a different way than normal, you need to send in a note. No student will be allowed to go home a different way unless we have been notified. The best way to notify us of a change in dismissal is to send in a note with your child in the morning. This should alleviate any problems at the end of the day.

*****Important*****
Please do not leave dismissal information on my voice mail or email.

Curriculum Information

Please refer to the Fifth Grade Curriculum page to view an outline that highlights the topics to be studies this year. My individual curriculum pages will give you information about the current units we are studying.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 508-541-5261 extension 2029, or email me at kroeberd@franklin.k12.ma.us. Mrs. Kroeber
