Food Allergies

An increasing number of children have life-threatening food allergies.

Foods that most commonly produce allergic reactions are

  • Peanuts and tree nuts
  • Shellfish/fish
  • Eggs
  • Soy
  • Milk

Wheat Allergic reactions

  • Ingestion: When a child eats or drinks food containing the allergen.
  • Inhalation: Some children react when they smell the food.
  • Touch: Others react when touching even a small amount of the food.

Prevention of an allergic response

  • Avoidance of foods that trigger the allergy is the most important aspect. Frequently this means carefully reading product labels.

Safety measures for the allergic child in school

  • A "Peanut Free" table has been established in the cafeteria. Any student who does not have peanut products in his/her/lunch may sit there, along with the children allergic to peanuts.
  • When a class has a student with severe food allergies, the parents will be sent a letter requesting that certain foods not be sent in for class parties.
  • If a child has an allergic reaction if he/she touches or smells the food, the class will be asked not to bring in snacks containing those foods. (they could bring those foods to eat in the cafeteria, however). Kennedy School staff appreciates your cooperation in helping provide a safe learning environment for all students.
