PCC Background The Oak Street PCC is a volunteer organization of all Oak Street parents and guardians. We believe you are the heart and soul of the PCC and we welcome any and all volunteers! Our mission: The PCC’s purpose is to enhance our children’s education by providing a variety of enrichment programs and enhance our school community by sponsoring a number of family activities and social events. How we support our mission: The PCC holds a number of fundraisers throughout the school year to raise money for our programs. Because of parents’ generosity, we are able to fund a variety of science and fine-arts enrichment programs, including field trips, as well as social and school-spirit raising events such as the Blizzard Ball and Fun Day. How we operate: The PCC is managed by an executive board, consisting of an Administrative Coordinator, a School Socials and Activities Coordinator, a Treasurer and a Secretary. The board handles issues such as the budget. The final board position, 501c3 Treasurer, is focused on obtaining 501c3 status for Oak Street PCC and setting up associated processes and reporting required for this status. The fundraisers, events and ongoing activities of the PCC are headed up by one or more chair people (or committees, for larger events), who typically run their group independently. The PCC board is there to support and help as needed. How we stay in touch: The PCC board meets monthly to discuss ongoing issues. We form an agenda for the general meetings. General PCC meetings are held once a month. All parents are invited to attend the general meetings to update peers on activities and events, discuss any concerns and propose new ideas. The board also publishes a monthly newsletter, which is sent out paperless via Constant Contact email, and posts information online at the Oak Street website. PCC reminders and other flyers will come home in backpacks and via email. To sign up for paperless communication, please fill out the form sent home in the Oak Street folders or contact Christine Smith at Christine.oliversmith@gmail.com. Bylaws and other PCC documents are also available at the school office and on the Oak Street School website: go to Franklin Town site, www.franklin.ma.us/, click schools, then select “Oak Street” and then “PCC Information’’ from the left-side menu.) How you can get involved: Please consider volunteering to be on a committee or to be an extra set of hands at a social event! Come to our monthly meetings and share your ideas. We certainly need your help, and we find that pitching in on PCC activities is a great way to meet other parents and to stay more connected to your child’s experience at Oak Street. 4. PCC Meeting Schedule for 2011-2012 This calendar will also be published in PCC newsletters. We have two general meetings in September to kick off the year. All meetings are on Thursdays. Morning meetings are at 9:30 AM and evening meetings are at 6:00 PM. PCC Programs and Activities Social events and school activities The PCC sponsors several social events and activities for students and families throughout the year. Events are listed in alphabetic order. 1. *Blizzard Ball. This is Oak Street’s social event of the year! It takes place on a Sunday afternoon in midwinter and includes a DJ, dancing and refreshments. Board games, coloring pages and face painting are also available. 2. Fifth Grade Activities. As the school year wraps up, there are a number of Grade 5 events, including one of the most entertaining of the year – The Fifth Grade Talent Show. Parents coordinate a special breakfast and oversee the purchase of a 5th grade gift. 3. Fine Arts and Science Enrichment Programs. These programs provide a range of math and science demonstrations, presentations, plays, musical productions and animal shows. Typically, these events are tied to a particular curriculum for one or more of the grades. 4. Fun Day. This is a school-wide event that provides a day of fun games for students at the end of the school year. The events are non-competitive and the children are encouraged to try to excel while having fun. Many parent volunteers are needed to assist with games and to provide snacks and drinks for the students. 5. *Ice Cream Social. The first social event of the year! Come enjoy an ice cream sundae with your student, while mingling and meeting other Oak Street families. This event normally occurs on the same night as the Fall Book Fair. 6. Kindergarten Meet and Greet and Pot Luck. These events provide activities for the Kindergarten students and their Families. The Kindergarten Meet and Greet is held on the first day of school, and the Kindergarten Pot Luck Dinner is scheduled for the fall. 7. Oak Street Bank. Our ongoing banking program is run through Dean Bank. With parents’ assistance, children can make online deposits at Oak Street into their Dean Bank accounts. 8. *Pasta Night. This great social event takes place in early spring in the Oak Street School cafeteria, and is aimed towards bringing families together to mix and mingle while enjoying a pasta meal. A fun DJ also plays music and gets the kids moving! This event normally occurs on the same night as the Spring Book Fair. 9. Providence Bruins Game. Come join other families for a fun day out at a Providence Bruins game! Oak Street families can purchase tickets for a special discounted price. The game date will be determined later in the school year. 10. School Store. The school store is run one or two times during the school year for students in Grade 2-5. The purpose is to help children practice their “money skills’’ by purchasing low-cost school supplies. On occasion, Grade 5 students act as cashiers. Parents oversee the helpers and handle the purchasing and set up. 11. Summer Reading Book Swap. During the school year, the PCC collects gently used books from families. At the end of the school year, volunteers will assist students in selecting a book to take home for their summer reading. *Denotes that sales from tickets sold for the event fund the event completely. Any extra monies go back to the PCC fund. |
Teacher and Staff Support The PCC supports the teachers and staff at Oak Street School on an ongoing basis as well as special events. 1. Room Parents. The PCC coordinates the selection of up to 2 room parents for each classroom. Room Parents assist the classroom teacher throughout the year. Activities vary by classroom, but could consist of coordinating parent volunteers to be guest readers or to assist with holiday crafts. At times, we have several volunteers for classrooms. When this occurs, room parents will be chosen by picking names out of a hat, preference will be given to parents who have not already been room parents. New this year, all Room Parents will be asked to attend a short meeting to learn about standards for communication, the state ethics law as relates to teacher gift giving, etc. In the past, the PCC has coordinated a “Wishing Well” or teacher’s wish list of items needed for their classrooms. Also new this year, each room parent will work with their classroom teacher to create the wish list for their class and pass along to the other classroom parents. Families can then choose to donate items or gift cards to the classrooms based upon those lists. 2. Photocopying. This group supports the teaching staff by handling their copying needs on Friday mornings. Typically, one or two volunteers handle the copying one Friday morning per month. The amount of photocopying will vary by week, but usually can be completed in an hour. 3. Recycling. This group supports the school staff by handling weekly recycling of paper and plastic products. Typically, each volunteer is scheduled for only 15 minutes one Wednesday morning per month, helping students empty the recycling bins from their classrooms into the large wheeled bins. 4. Staff Appreciation Luncheon. This special event takes place in May. This luncheon allows all our families at Oak Street to show our teachers how much we appreciate their hard work. A committee chairperson coordinates many volunteers who make hot and cold dishes, snacks and special treats. 5. Staff Welcome Back Breakfast. This breakfast is held before the first day of school and is an effort by the Oak Street families to welcome the teachers back to school. Like the luncheon, it requires many volunteers to send in baked goods and other treats. Fundraising Activities: The PCC coordinates several fundraising activities to raise money for our programs. The Fundraising Committee reviews current fundraising programs and recommends changes or additions to the fundraising efforts of the PCC. We currently have 2 main Fundraisers per year, and several “no-cost” ongoing programs that raise money for the PCC. 1. Fall Fundraiser ~ Held in October/November Our fall fundraiser for 2011 will be a scrips program through Great Lakes Scrip Center. Families will be able to purchase gift cards at face value for more than 100 stores, restaurants and services. Oak Street PCC will receive between 3% and 10% of the value of each gift card purchased. Packets will come home in backpacks in October, gift cards will be distributed in time for holiday gift giving. 2. Spring Raffle/Silent Auction ~ Held in April This will be the 4th annual Spring Raffle and Silent Auction, held in conjunction with the Arts Night school event. This fundraiser has been a great success and currently brings in nearly half of the PCC’s annual revenues!! The raffle consists of baskets put together from classroom donations, as well as other donated items. Auction items include many special experiences with teachers and staff. This fundraiser requires many parent volunteers to run successfully. The Raffle/Auction Committee starts meeting in early winter to start selecting the basket themes, coordinating communications and collecting donations for raffle and auction items. 3. Box Tops for Education. (Ongoing Fundraiser). Families collect box tops from General Mills and other products and send in to school. Box Tops for Education allows us to send in up to $20,000 worth of box tops each year! Please remember to clip the Box Top symbol off of packages you have at home. 10 cents really adds up! We usually raise more than $1,000 per year through this program. 4. QSP Magazine Orders and Renewals. (Ongoing Fundraiser) Oak Street PCC used to do a magazine drive every year through QSP. Although this is no longer our big fall fundraiser, families can still renew their magazines online (or order new ones) through QSP. To order, go to www.qsp.com and enter the new code for Oak St. school, 1090344. Oak Street PCC will earn 40% of the value of each order. 5. Restaurant Nights. (Ongoing Fundraiser) The PCC will hold regular Oak Street Nights at local restaurants about once per month. Families can choose to have dinner out and socialize with other Oak Street families. The PCC earns a percentage (10% to 20%) of the total amount spent by our families. More information on restaurant nights will be included in our monthly newsletters. 6. Stop and Shop A+ Program. (Ongoing Fundraiser). Parents simply register their Stop and Shop card with the program and select Oak Street School as the beneficiary. Stop and Shop keeps track of all purchases made with the card during the promotional period. We’ve earned more than $1,500 through this free program over the past 2 years! Look for more information this fall on how and when to register your cards. 7. Target Purchases. (Ongoing Fundraiser) When an adult uses a Target credit card, they can designate Oak Street as the beneficiary of 1% of the total purchase. 8. Oak Street Spirit Wear. Clothing and accessories available to students and families to promote school spirit are sold twice a year. Parent volunteers order and distribute the “spirit wear.’’ The basic Oak Street T-shirts are sold at cost, while other items are sold for a small profit. 9. Direct Donations. Some parents choose not to participate in our fundraising activities, but instead contribute directly to the PCC. In this case, they can write a check to “Oak Street PCC”, and 100% of each donation will go directly to our programs and activities. Other Important PCC Activities 1. Community Service. This committee heads up a number of different community efforts. The purpose is to involve students and help them foster a sense that they can make a difference in our community. Each year, we take donations to the Franklin Food Pantry, run a holiday drive, and have an Oak St. team for the Franklin Relay for Life. 2. Yearbook. The school-wide yearbook covers every social event and is a great memory of the school year! Many parent volunteers are needed to make this come together. 7.
