PARENT COMMUNICATION COUNCIL MEETING
Friday, February 7, 2011, 9:15AM
The PCC Meeting was called to order by Co-Chair Sue Pauplis at 9:20 AM in the Parmenter library with 14 people in attendance.
Principal's Report Mr. Morris reported that the DPW removed the snow from our school roof. Emergency busing, due to the snow, has been implemented. The shuttle bus is available for walkers. Storage containers for the solar panels are arriving today. The School Council will be holding their first meeting in March. They are in need of a community member volunteer, someone who has no involvement with the school, to be on their team. They have a literacy consultant who is here today. She comes once a month and works with teachers and students of different grade levels to teach them how to prepare for tests. She tries to make it fun by making it into a game. Some committees have sent home paper forms without getting approval first. All flyers or announcements must first be sent to Lee Healey, PCC Co-Chair, who will screen them and forward on to Mr. Morris for final approval. You can leave the forms in Lee's mailbox. Keep in mind that you can only send home one sheet of paper, so utilize both the front and back of the sheet. Forms that need to be filled out and sent back with information on them will be the only type of forms allowed to be sent home. Otherwise, committees must advertise in the Weekly Update. They are also allowed to send out one email specifically related to their event. Please refer to the February 11th Parmenter Weekly Update for the rest of his report.
Treasurer's Report Mandy Costa reported that our current bank balance is $21,650. We received a check from BJ's for $110 (which was $90 under budget). However, Pennies for Parmenter have already raised $45 (which is over budget). There was a vote to change the Fun Run Budget line item from "Income $150, Expense $0" to "Income $4000, Expense $3000" and it was approved unanimously.
Yearbook - The orders are going well and the book is about 50% complete. They are extending the deadline to Wednesday, February 16th.
Talent Show - Rebecca Cameron reported that they have a total of 65 acts (which is the same as last year). She stressed that all kids MUST HAVE A PARENT with them. No order for the acts has been determined as of yet and will not be determined until the week before the dress rehearsal. The number that was sent home to parents is their child's act number (NOT their order number). The practices will be held in the gym. They are scheduled for February 15, 16 & 17 and March 8, 9, 10. All acts need to attend one of these practices for both weeks. She wanted to thank Liz Phillips for helping to arrange the Kindergarten act, as well as Holley Sennott and Sue Gendreau for helping to arrange the 5th grade act.
Stop & Shop Just a reminder that the earning period runs until March 25th. If you haven't registered your card yet, there is still time.
Terracycle Mandy reported that weve been collecting approximately 1000 Capri Sun & 1000 Zip lock bags each week. This is raising approximately $30 per week, so keep reminding your children to save them. If you are interested in recycling more products, you can go to terracycle.net. This site explains what products you can collect and send in to them, as well as how to select a school to forward the money to.
Labels for Education Per Michelle Foley, "Thank You Parmenter
Familes!!" She sent off 940 Labels for Education points. We were able to place
an order for new playground equipment for the Spring. Hopefully all this snow melts
quickly so the kids can enjoy the new stuff. The order was for
Fundraising Committee - The committee met and talked about revamping and combining some of the various fundraisers. However, it would like your feedback. Mandy has created a survey through Survey Monkey to ask for your input. The Survey can be found in the February 11th Parmenter Weekly Update. In order to keep the survey free, she has divided it into grade levels. Please choose your oldest child's grade and fill out the survey. The survey is the same for all grade levels.
Auction - Sharon Miller reported that the date has been set for Saturday, April 2nd at the Franklin Elks. The committee meets each Wednesday at 12:30PM at 32 Mary Jane Rd, so if anyone is interested, feel free to come. The committee will be in need of volunteers the day of the event, so if there is someone who can not commit to the committee, but would like to help out in a small way, this is a great way to help. The committee is also looking for donations to the event. If anyone has something they want to contribute, please contact Sharon at email@example.com .
Trivia Bee this is being held March 7th at the Horace Mann Auditorium. It is run by the Franklin Education Fund and the topic this year is general trivia. Parmenter is in need of 3 parents who can represent the school. Please contact any member of the PCC board if you are interested in this.
Book Swap Aloris Query presented her idea of having a weekly book swap. She said that she would request each student to bring in a gently used book from home. Aloris would sort the books and keep them at her house. The students would then have the opportunity to "shop" for a book before school from 8:15AM 8:30AM. Grades would be combined so that the Kindergarten and 1st grade would shop one day, 2nd & 3rd another and 4th & 5th another. Her idea will be presented to Mr. Morris for approval.
GoodSearch.com Mandy explained this website, which is powered by Yahoo. Mandy will set up a link to put into the Newsletter so that parents can click on it. When you click on the link, it will install a tool bar on your computer. You would pick your charity (Parmenter school) and every time you search for something through this search engine, the school will earn 1 cent. There is also a shopping component where the school would also receive a credit percentage if you shop through their site.
Adjournment Sue Pauplis adjourned the meeting at 10:55AM.
Next PCC Meeting: Our next PCC Meeting is scheduled for March 11, 2011 @ 9:15AM.
