Current Unit: Chapter 1.1 to 1.3: All About Patterns AND Chapter 9.2: Solving Equations

Chapter 1 Overview: In this chapter, students will learn to use different strategies to extend and generalize patterns in a variety of contexts, and they will develop stronger understandings of the mathematical concepts underlying the patterns. To achieve these goals, students study a broad range of patterns, beginning with Pascal’s triangle and ending with Euclidean triangles. Students also review the order of operations.

The first three lessons introduce core algebraic concepts and reasoning skills that serve as a foundation for later chapters. Students identify patterns, develop techniques for expressing patterns using rules, and apply rules to determine the outcomes.

Chapter 1 Objectives:

  • Recognize, describe and extend patterns of shapes and numbers
  • Follow common rules to complete input/output tables and rules for sequences
  • Evaluate numeric expressions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using the order of operations
  • Write rules that connect two quantities

  • Chapter 9 Overview: Students learn how to use backtracking for solving equations. The backtracking method is introduced by means of flowcharts. Students can use this method to find solutions for many equations in which the variable occurs only once.

    Chapter 9 Objectives:
  • Solve equations by backtracking
