Objectives for Term 1:
 

UNIT 1: Culture & Archaeology

Culture:

  • Discover that all cultures have common traits
  • Discuss how the traits of a culture are influenced by the way the environment helps people meet their three basic needs
  • Analyze how cultures develop from simple social groups to complext civilizations by studying the Pyramid of Cultural Development (based on Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs)
  • Understand key terms such as culture, customs, traditions, legacy, society, and values
  • Discuss the role of religion in Egyptian societyli>
  • Apply new understandings of culture by identifying the cultural traits of the USA
  • Archaeology:

  • Define key terms such as archaeology, prehistory, fossil, artifact, oral tradition, primary source, secondary source, excavation, archaeological record, kitchen midden
  • Understand the differences between primary and secondary soures, and discuss why historians always question their sources
  • Analyze the differences between Classic Archaeology and modern archaeology
  • Identify key people such as Howard Carter, Lord Carnavon, and the Leakeys
  • Discover the processes used when excavating an archaeological dig
  • Understand the differences between the main types of archaeological dating; cultural dating, absolute dating, relative dating, and scientific dating (such as dendrochronology, radio-carbon dating, and stratigraphy)
  • Discover that archaeological knowledge is often revised based on new discoveries or theories
