Remington Middle School Band Introduction

2011-2012 School Year

Dear Band Students and Parents:

Welcome to a new and exciting year in the Franklin music program. I am looking forward to meeting each and every one of you. I would like to take this time to explain our band program and my expectations for the students. At the Remington Middle School there will be two bands, the Concert Band and the Symphony Band. The Concert Band is a band whose primary focus will be refining the basic skills of the young musicians. This band is for students who have played for one year or who would like to learn a new instrument this year. The Symphony Band is for the more advanced students who have played previously. Both of the bands will rehearse every other day in the twelve day cycle during X Period. The Concert Band will rehearse on the even cycle days and the Symphony Band will rehearse on days the odd cycle days. In addition to these regularly scheduled band rehearsals, the students will have sectional rehearsals, (small group lessons organized by the instrument type). These rehearsals will be held during class time on a pull-out basis. Students will be excused from one class per week to attend the sectional rehearsals. This scheduled on a rotating basis so that the students will not miss the same class each week.

All of this hard work and commitment during rehearsals will contribute to the success of two concerts during the school year. This year due to budget cuts the concerts will be held during the school day. These concerts will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will be approximately one hour in length. The dates of these concerts can be found on the band calendar page of this website. Performances are very positive experiences which give students the chance to display their talents.

It is important to be prepared for all rehearsals to create the best environment for learning. A commitment to daily practice outside of school will help to create this environment Students should practice two hours per week outside of their band rehearsals and lessons. Each student should strive to be the best musician they can be.

Please review the enclosed calendar and syllabus then sign and return the contract by Wednesday, September 14th. I am excited to be a part of the Franklin Band Program and I look forward to a great year ahead. May the year be filled with success.

Sincerely yours,

Nancy Schoen

Director of Music Franklin Public Schools
