Mr. Moriarty's
Grades 6, 7 & 8
Literacy Classes
Course Description
Literacy is a supplemental subject, in addition to a student’s English major course. Typically, Literacy is taken in place of a Foreign Language class. Students enrolled have the benefit of receiving additional support, in a small group setting, with areas of need in the English Language Arts. Our goals include: exposing students to a wide variety of literary genres, enhancing the reading and writing skills outlined in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, and nurturing the reading strategies needed to be an effective, life-long reader. Lessons and activities are planned to balance individualized, explicit skills instruction, whole-class instruction with developmentally appropriate literature, and independent reading and writing. Presentation and student interactions are designed to
accommodate various learning styles.
Long-Term Projects & Homework
Due to the nature of this unique class, homework and outside projects are not assigned. On balance, students are expected to complete a rigorous curriculum with a maximum amount of time spent on focussed reading and writing activities.
