Wilson Reading Instruction

Course Description

The Wilson Reading Program is a multi-sensory language program. Wilson Reading instruction is provided for that small percentage of students whose needs require a more intensive intervention to teach accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Typically, Wilson Reading is taken in place of a Foreign Language class.

The Wilson Reading Program has 12 Steps. All students begin with step 1 and progress sequentially. Many students will continue with Wilson Reading Instruction through all 12 Steps, others might discontinue instruction after completing Step 10. The time it takes to complete the Wilson Reading Program varies significantly from student to student. Typically, a student that has been identified as needing this type of instruction will spend 4-6 years completing the program. For all students it is rigorous, for many it is less than glamorous, but for most students it is not only highly effective, but truly a great benefit to their overall reading and spelling achievement.

Our Current Unit

Due to the nature of this unique course, students or small groups work at their own pace and progress through each step at different rates. Therefore, we do not study in traditional "units". For information about your child's current STEP or if you just want to check in on their progress, please send me an email or give me a call. No question is too small!!

Long-Term Projects & Homework

Due to the nature of this unique course, homework and outside projects are not assigned. On balance, students are expected to complete a rigorous curriculum with a maximum amount of time spent on accurate and fluent word reading and spelling activities.
