 Engineering Design Process Vocabulary

Design Brief
A design brief is a statement, usually written, that provides a detailed description of the engineering problem to be solved.

Design Constraints
Engineering solutions may have limitations or restrictions such as size, weight, appearance, and almost certainly, cost.

Engineering Research
Engineers gather information about the problem they seek to solve.  Engineers may examine existing technologies, conduct surveys, consider scientific principles, and consult legal and ethical experts to help them fully understand the problem before they consider possible solutions.

Engineering Tradeoffs
Some engineering solutions may have undesirable features or effects.  Engineers must identify them, and make decisions about whether the benefits of the solution outweigh the undesirable effects.

Prototype
A prototype is a working model that is built to test and evaluate a design solution.  Prototypes may be full sized or built to scale, and inexpensive materials may be substituted for actual production materials.
