 Manufacturing Technology Unit Overview

Why are we learning about manufacturing technology?

Manufacturing is a system that changes materials into usable products.  Engineers seek to design and improve the machinery, materials, and processes that contribute to these complex systems.

Engineering students must understand the basic components of manufacturing systems and have awareness of the specific activities involved in the manufacturing process.

What processes may be involved in a manufacturing system?

Raw materials, such as wood and iron ore, are processed into industrial materials such as lumber and steel.  Industrial materials may then be further processed by forming, shaping, combining, and conditioning.

Then, after products are designed and engineered, manufacturing companies  purchase the precise industrial materials they will need to produce their products.  Goods are then manufactured within a specific production system such as continuous, custom, or job lot.   Some additional manufacturing activities include quality control, packaging, and sales.

Will there be any classroom activities to help us learn about manufacturing technology?

• Students will gather information about specific manufacturing processes, and create a glossary of manufacturing terms and ideas.

• Students will select a manufactured product, trace its production history, and create a graphical representation of the findings of their research.

• The class will act as a manufacturing company to mass produce a "product."  Students will divide into departments and participate in each stage of the manufacturing process.

As preparation for the open response test items, students will create brief but complete written descriptions of the three main types of production, and will research and identify examples of products made using each type of production.

Will there be a test?

Students will be assessed on the thoroughness and quality of their manufacturing technology research project.  Students will also complete a vocabulary quiz (fill in the blank), and a selection of written open response test items.

Which Massachusetts learning standards will we cover?

Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework 4:

4.1  Describe and explain the manufacturing systems of custom and mass production.

4.3  Describe a manufacturing organization, e.g., corporate structure, research and development, production, marketing, quality control, distribution.

4.4  Explain basic processes in manufacturing systems, e.g., cutting, shaping, assembling, joining, finishing, quality control, and safety.
