 Communication Technology Vocabulary


Source
The cause or origin of a message or a stream of data.  The source could also be the person or device that originates any form of communication.

Encoder
The component of a communication system that converts a message or stream of data into a different format.

Decoder
The component of a communication system that converts a message or stream of data into ordinary language that is audible or readable.

Transmitter
The component of a communication system that sends a message, sound or stream of data.  A transmitter directs the message or stream of data outward through the system.

Receiver
The component of a communication system in which the message is received from the transmitter.

Destination
The place set for the end of a communication system, or the place to which something is sent.

Storage
An electronic memory device where data can be entered, held, and retrieved at a later time.

Retrieval
The operation or act of accessing information in memory.
