Technology and Engineering Overview
Grades Six, Seven, and Eight

The technology and engineering education class at Annie Sullivan Middle School is offered to all students in the Unified Arts schedule rotation. The objectives for this class are adopted directly from the learning standards set forth by the Massachusetts Science and Technology/ Engineering Curriculum Framework.

Students are ultimately tested on these learning standards during the Grade 8 MCAS Science and Technology/Engineering test. The test items that are directly related to the technology/engineering learning standards have typically comprised 25% of the MCAS Grade 8 Science and Technology/ Engineering test.

These technology and engineering learning standards are beyond the scope of the regular science classes, in which the Earth, life, and physical science learning standards are presented.

The Franklin technology and engineering middle school curriculum was developed to provide students the opportunity to master each of the following broad concepts:

Grade 6
• Introduction to Structural Technology
• Tools and Machines: Safe and Proper Use
• Communication Technologies
• Robotic Programming

Grade 7
• Introduction to Engineering Design Process
• Engineering Representation
• Manufacturing Technologies
• Tools and Materials

Grade 8
• Vehicle Systems
• Bridge Structures
• Communication Technologies
• Biotechnologies
