Franklin Middle School Summer Academic Reinforcement and Enrichment Programs

The Middle School Summer Enrichment Program will be offered from July 12 to August 13. Refer to attached schedule for dates, times and fees for specific classes.  Class registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  In the case of simultaneous enrollment, a lottery system will be used.  Pre-registration is available until Friday, May 28.  Please submit the class fee with registration form.  The check should be made to Franklin Public Schools, Community Education.  If you have any questions, please call Pandora Carlucci at 541-5293.  Thank you.

Summer School Course Offerings

Enrichment Classes at Remington Middle School


Theatre, Drama and More, Marushka Waters, Franklin High School Drama Teacher

Intensive theatre workshop, exploring the multiple aspects of drama. ) One week, July 12 – 16, 4 hours per day (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) (Minimum 10 students, maximum 14 students)                                        $ 80.00


Painting to Your Own Style, Gail Eckberg-Ferguson, Community Artist

Students will cultivate individual painting skills which will show “painting differently vs. same-workshop style” can be better.  The student will learn the properties of waterbased painting mediums, appropriate art papers and brushes.  The student will choose to work with watercolor, acrylic or water mixable oil paint.  The student will focus on developing personal painting style with teacher’s guidance.  The student will be encouraged to feel and think “freedom” to take personal creativity to a higher art level in technique, form, line, and color.  The goal is for the student to complete a picture at each daily session.  Three weeks, 2 hours per day, July 12 – July 30, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Minimum 10 students, maximum 14 students)                                                                       $120.00


Introduction to Child Development, Joane M. Vierck, Educational Support Personnel  

This course is designed to teach young adolescents basic facts about child development, discuss and examine some common misconceptions about children, and provide important data to adolescents who may have a younger sibling or are babysitting. (2 weeks, 2 hours per day)

RoadRunner Club, Thomas Gately, Educational Support Personnel

An early drop off option for elementary and middle school students.

Stretching, toning and fitness exercises followed by a mile (or more) run, cooling exercises, and then on to the 8:30 a.m. class.  Class is available in 1-week multiple sessions

Art Workshop Intensive, Alicia Bell & George Ratkevich, Franklin High School Faculty

Students will receive instruction in drawing, painting, and sculpture, working both from observation (still life, landscapes, and/or portraits) and imagination.  Both individual and group work will be created throughout the course of the two weeks. (Minimum 12 students)

August 2 – August 13 (2 weeks), 25 hours, 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.                                                                      $125.00


Jazz in the Summer, Peter Light, Franklin High School Faculty

The goal of this one-week workshop is to provide young musicians with an opportunity to explore Jazz through performance.  Students will be introduced to Jazz through two mediums: Big Band music and Improvisation.  Students will work with Franklin Public Schools Music Staff and qualified, responsible high school musicians.  The class is for incoming 7th, 8th and 9th grade students.

July 12 – July 16, (1 week), 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Registration fee includes book for the class and CD. (Optional T-shirt is an extra $10.00)         $ 90.00



Summer Music Program, Sarah Gardner and Wendy Clark, Franklin Music Faculty

Franklin Summer Music Program is for instrumental students with at least one year of playing experience.  The program includes a performing ensemble and two classes directed by the Franklin Music Staff and supported by Franklin High School students.  The daily schedule: 8:30 – 10:00 ensemble rehearsal; 10:00 – 10:30 snack & outdoor activity (bring own snack); 10:30 – 11:15 course I, and 11:15 – 12:00 Course II.  Students will be placed in tow groups to attend classes.  Theory will include topics like reading, rhythm, notation and form.  Connections will discuss how music relates to other fields in the arts.  Final Registration deadline is Friday, June 18th.  There is no walk-in registration for this class. July 26 to August 6 (2 weeks), 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, incoming 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th grade students.             $150.00


Strength and Speed Training for Beginners, Brad Sidwell and Kevin Clark

This is a two-week course where students will learn the basic fundamentals of strength and speed training.  Particular attention will be paid to stretching, weight room safety, proper running form and nutrition.  The course will have ten different sessions taking place in the Franklin High School weight room, field house and, weather permitting, the athletic fields.  This class is open to both boys and girls, and to middle school and high school students.  (Minimum enrollment is 15 students, maximum is 40)

Academic Reinforcement Classes

To be held at the Remington Middle School Campus


These classes follow a slightly different schedule.  Each class is 5 weeks in length, meets 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday) and has a meeting time of 90 minutes per day for a total of 90 class hours.  The cost per class is $150.00.  These classes may be taken for make-up credit or as a preview for the upcoming year.  (Minimum enrollment of 10 students per each class.)  All classes meet in the morning.
